Hugh was awakened by warm sunlight on his face. He stretched out on the bed and, for a moment, wasn’t sure why he was so comfortable. Then he felt the body next to him move and remembered everything. He was in Gerald’s bed, in Gerald’s house on Campion Square, and where he had spent the most enjoyable night he had spent in ages. He didn’t want to move, but as attractive as the idea of spending the morning beside Gerald was, he didn’t know the schedule of the household. Best to slip out before anyone noticed and caused trouble for Gerald.

Hugh was just rolling over when he felt an arm around his waist. That was too tempting. He slid his hand down, but whether to move the hand that rested there or hold it, he hadn’t decided.

“Will they look for you at the inn?” Gerald mumbled, sounding more than half asleep.

“I don’t want to get you in trouble.”

“No trouble. Not one of Mrs. Reynolds’s days. It’s Wednesday, right? Not Mrs. Reynolds’s or Becky’s or Betsy’s. And no McKenzie and Company for me. No trouble day.”

A no trouble day. That sounded lovely. And the sun coming through the gap in the curtains was weak early morning light, now that he looked at it. Far too early to be roaming the streets of London. “If I don’t show up at the inn, they’ll just think I’m still out gallivanting from last night. Unless someone remembers I told them I’d be away on some personal business for a couple days. I thought Brighton would take longer.”

“Hmm. Then maybe you should gallivant a bit more.”

Hugh slipped back under the covers and felt Gerald nestle against his back. “A little more sleep wouldn’t hurt.” He could feel Gerald’s breath against his skin. It felt as if he’d already fallen back asleep. That seemed a good idea, so Hugh let his eyes drift closed and enjoyed the feeling of having a warm body nestled against him.
